No, do not use it. They sell a product at Lowe's or Home Depot is called a box of old work ceiling fan. It comes with a bar with two pieces that broaden son bar out and it strongly supports between the joists. This is the best box provided support for a ceiling fan, and the best part is that you do not have to climb into the attic to install it.
