What are the requirements for charging a battery?
I am building a small Wind Generator for a college project. The generator currently produces an output of 2.5 V AC output @ 8mA. This should be sufficient to overcome the voltage with a wave rectifier bridge using Schottky diodes, correct? In addition, the 2.5V and 8mA are only averages and are highly variable even at a constant speed of the wind. For example, the voltage output can vary from 0.5 V to 3.5 V over a period of 2-3 seconds. If I rectify this signal, so I'm having a DC output with a variable of the same voltage, correct? I'm wanting to store the rectified output in a battery (two AA batteries, perhaps). Can we change the DC voltage delivered to a or does the battery need to be constant voltage? I guess I'm wanting to know if the generator output must be rectified "cleaned" in some way before sending it to a battery. Thank you
No, the batteries maintain constant tension. But you need a diode series so that when the generator output is less than the battery voltage, the batteries are not discharged into the generator. But if you're right AC voltage, which is supported. Of course, you must use rechargeable AA batteries. They are usually 1.2 volts each, total 2.4 volts, but voltage load will be higher, probably close to 3 volts. Thus, the batteries charge when the DC output is above 3 volts, and not when it is below. What you should pay attention to is: 1. Too high a rate drop. It depends on battery type and rating. Current is too high can damage the battery. 2. The surcharge will also damage the battery. Again, depends on currents, and the battery type and size. A Battery Charger is usually electronics that periodically checks the status of the battery and adjusts the current required. .
