Solar Pump
I need to power a water pump which requires 8 amps 120V continuous running. I need the sun to do so. Ideas?
Im trying to install a solar system to power on August 1 Amperage 120V water pump. I want to use a solar panel to run it. Someone can suggest a configuration comprising panels and an inverter that work for this? I need a constant 1248 watts. I'll use an array of battery too.
If you run the pump continuously, the cost is prohibitive. A panel 12vdc 2a is about 2x4foot and cost between $ 150-350. You would need more than 50 panels to run (taking into account the heat lost to the UPS.) Each panel puts out 26watts sunlight. In Phoenix, the average hours in the sun is about 6hours/day. In Duluth, MN, the average is 4.5 FSH. I built and ran a photovoltaic system for a house I lived in the 1980s. The biggest problem is the storage battery. It turns out that one needs about 1.5 months of storage dollars. In your case, you need about over 10,000 amphrs 12v battery. All these panels and batteries and the converter cover you will run the pump 24hr/day, 365days/year. Several suggestions - run the pump during the day and use an elevated tank water storage energy / dark hours - Get a smaller pump - Instead of a big pump, 120VAC, 12DC pass several small Pumps (ditch the inverter, I used all 12vdc lights and appliances, never bothered with an inverter). If you have additional know-how, place the panels on trackers to track the sun, you save a panel or two and maybe 1 or 2 batteries.
