Why not surge protector built into the house wiring?

If electricians already know there is a chance for surges, why not put in a standard type of the right surge protector at the breaker box for all the electricity from the house is the same? Would it make more sense than having to buy multiple surge protectors for each outlet and / or device in the house?

Chances are, you do not need a surge protector on all output devices or in your home, as the sensitive equipment such as computers, perhaps a stereo or TV, etc. Unless you get a significant increase, I'd say your average microwave, toaster, refrigerator, etc. can handle a normal climb without any problems. Otherwise, you would hear about people losing these devices all the time. You can get breakers ground fault with interrupts to put in your breaker panel. They are more expensive than regular, and most cities do not need it in their code electricity. Most manufacturers build to meet code, and most people think this is enough to be sure.
