my brother has pnemonia and is on a ventalator?

my brother is 34. He was admitted to hospital on 23 of 2009 December It was placed on a ventilator on the 26th because it has not improved and seems to be unhappy. nurses were never any encouragement. it is now January 2, 2010 Is it normal to be on this machine so long? these are questions I can ask to better understand what its result could be? Yesterday I touched her leg and it was icy, but he was sweating. what does that mean? all answers are appreciated .. worried!

There are some bugs especially around this bad flu season passes .... and it is perfectly normal to be on a ventilator for few weeks, if ill with pneumonia. Currently, care will be concentrated toward the treatment of the infection and get him stable enough to begin to "wean off the ventilator, which means that we slowly decrease the amount of breathing machine does it for him and slowly increase what he does on his own. Then, when it is sufficiently cured, it can be "extubated", or breathing tube pulled. However, neither nurses or any other person will be able to give you the right amount of time that will happen in ... it is impossible because there are large variations between person to person when it comes to recovery time. Asl questions are things you do not understand, ask about the chest x-ray results and if his work is the improvement of blood ... these are routine tests that are repeated frequently in people suffering from pneumonia. Ask what type of pneumonia at his disposal and do a little research ... Ventilated patients require a very high level of care and time to heal. Try to be patient and hold on .... good luck
